Thin needles. Targeted trigger points. Immediate release of deep muscle tension that stretching and massage can't reach.
Dry needling is a therapeutic technique that uses thin, sterile needles to target myofascial trigger points — tight, knotted areas within muscle tissue that cause pain, restrict movement, and refer pain to other areas of the body. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine meridians, dry needling is grounded in Western anatomy and neuroscience. When a needle is inserted into a trigger point, it causes a local twitch response — a brief involuntary muscle contraction that releases the knot, increases blood flow, and resets the neuromuscular system. At SSC of Chicago, dry needling is performed by our licensed chiropractors as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, often combined with chiropractic adjustments and functional rehabilitation.
Your provider will identify the specific trigger points contributing to your pain through palpation and movement assessment.
The area is cleaned and thin, sterile needles are inserted directly into the trigger points. Most patients feel minimal discomfort — a brief ache or twitch.
You may feel a local twitch response — a brief involuntary muscle contraction. This is a positive sign that the trigger point is releasing.
The needles remain in place for 5–20 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Many patients feel immediate relief.
Post-treatment soreness is normal for 24–48 hours, similar to a deep tissue massage. Hydration and gentle movement accelerate recovery.
